the candy stash, and Big Brother

M had the candy stash from school yesterday. (Check out an old post about handling candy stash days...) She had one or two pieces with her after-school snack, then this morning,  she asked for a sucker with breakfast, and I said, “sure.” She handles this stuff so well… I too am still amazed.

Then she worried, “Uh oh, they will see my green tongue and know I had candy with breakfast!” I said, “So?” She replied, “Well, Mr. C said if we eat candy we’ll get hyper.” Sheesh. I told her not to worry, that candy doesn’t make you hyper, though some people think it does. I did say that if all you ate was a sucker, you might get a little hungry or cranky before lunch, but the thought that she was worried about her green tongue “giving her away” made me sad. (She also had some milk and cereal.)

Feels like we are being watched. Read this article, and tell me we aren’t…

How did your kids handle the stash? How are you being “watched” and interfered with in terms of  how and what you are feeding your family?

    I cannot believe that article about the preschooler’s lunch! WHAT?! That sounds like a perfect (the homemade one) school lunch to me. I wonder what would happen if you compared the turkey & cheese sandwich to the nuggets in terms of protein and other “healthy” standards? Also, because the little kid was told their lunch was bad, she ONLY ate the 3 nuggets. That sounds even less balanced! The whole thing makes zero sense.

    I love that at my kids school, they check to see that the kids are eating “most” of what is on their plate or in their lunchbox, but they are careful to give child-sized portions and do not dictate what exactly they have to eat. They also offer a very balanced tray so that the kids are willing to try to eat something of what they have. My daughter went from almost always taking her lunch in kindergarten (when they had a different cook) to now in 6th grade almost never packs a lunch for school.

    My favorite thing they have started (and my kids’ fave too) is “taste testing” day. The cook will take a small cup (think dixie sized) and offer the kids who want to participate in the tasting, 3 or 4 different kinds of something. One day it was rice, so she had white, brown, long grain, etc. Once it was oatmeals, another time it was different kinds of beans. If they like it, they can have a full serving. She takes a vote, and the “most popular” will be made the next time she makes that kind of food. I know it’s made my kids more willing to try new stuff at home. They’ll come & ask if I can “make ____ like Mrs. W makes it at school” I’ve even taken to telling them that “I made it JUST LIKE Mrs. W’s at school lunch” to get them to try something that I made that they previously “didn’t like”. Heehee…

    My four year old had a large amount of treats from his school party on Monday. As always, I said he could keep it around to look at/ sort/ eat on Monday. On Tuesday we could put it away and he could have some with meals. Interestingly he worked really hard to get it all eaten before bed on Monday. This is the first time he has tried this. In the past he has enjoyed the looking/ sorting/ eating and then has also enjoyed having it at meals later on. I wonder what he will chose to do with his next pile of candy at the next holiday. Will he remember how much of a stomach ache he had? Or will he remember the joy of being able to have it all to himself?

      I love that you are curious about what will happen. There have been times where M has had more than a few pieces, but the majority f the time she does surprisingly well with not overdoing it and listening to her is hard not to jump in, but I never regret sticking with it!
