reader question: “I’d love to rid my house of the sugary cereal, but they go on sale and we buy them in limited quantities. My struggle is some mornings I  make oatmeal or malt-o-meal. My 3 year old son wants sugary cereal.  I’d love him to have healthy, yummy oatmeal. Is the DOR the same for  breakfast? I think he has a texture issue with the oatmeal. Maybe. Or it might just be he knows there’s a box of goodness in the cupboard.  Of course I want him to eat breakfast or else...

Another danger of trying to cater to your child’s whims with foods is just that, they are whims, those kiddos are fickle little beasts! So, I’ve been wrestling with a post about adult picky eating and the notion of “should” and I thought I’d take a break and put this out there. Last month, M hung out with a great friend/Auntie type (I am enamored with the Indian tradition of calling all special adults “Auntie” or “Uncle” for M. We don’t have much extended family, and it feels special to me…) She came back with a little tupperware container of pomegranate seeds. (Sorry...

foods I craved as a kid that taste gross to me now…

On a recent car trip, I was hankering for a snack, and found these. The cheddar club sandwich cracker. Now, it wasn’t the crackers with the little bucket of cheese with the plastic red stick, but it was close. There are a few foods that stick out in my memory as extra-special, that I really craved, mostly because I couldn’t have it. Foods I loved, ate as much as I could when I got the chance (begging the little red stick off a friend at school, or from the neighbor down the...
