is it ever OK to eat in front of TV… and readers, how do you eat your popcorn?

thanks for all your comments on my earlier post. A question popped up, and was one of my reader questions: Is it OK to occasionally eat in front of the TV?

Sure! We do the same, about every 10 days or so we plan to have our snack during a movie- usually popcorn (M likes hers air-popped with butter and sugar like in Germany) with some lemonade and fruit. I do think she tends to eat more than she would otherwise, but I trust that her internal regulation will work it out…
Ask yourself a few questions, something like, are you enjoying it? Are you watching TV to avoid each other, out of boredom, most meals and snacks, to tune out so you don’t have to pay attention to what you are eating? How do you feel after you eat in front of the TV- “that was fun,” or guilt, or “I can’t believe I ate all that?” Eating for entertainment is sometimes OK and is part of normal eating.

international readers (more than 50 countries and territories are reading FFD!) how do you eat your popcorn?

We oil-pop on the stove. My daughter likes it plain, not even any salt, but I prefer real melted butter and real grated parmesan on it. Yum!

I'm a big fan of air-popped popcorn, with plenty of butter and a little bit of salt.

We pop ours in a brown paper bag in the microwave (we do it plain but you can add oil and salt to the bag) then add either butter or shredded cheddar cheese. Yum!

I buy microwave popcorn that is as plain as possible, then put my own butter and kosher salt on it.

I think people in Spain eat mostly store-bought microwaveable, salted popcorn. I have also seen sweet popcorn and butter-flavoured popcorn at some larger supermarkets. I find microwaveable popcorn too salty, and the portions too big, so I prefer to make it at home: one handful of kernels and one tablespoon of olive oil yields a small (cereal-sized) bowl of popcorn. I pop them
in a skillet with a heavy lid, it only takes a couple of minutes, and when they are done you can add as much salt as you want. For breakfast or a more filling snack, I sometimes pop a handful of kernels, let them cool down unsalted, and eat them with yogurt.

From the Netherlands here. I rarely eat popcorn, but if I do, I pop it myself in a pan with some oil and eat it salted.

I live in Germany, but come from the US originally. I eat it airpopped with butter and brewers yeast, because that's what I grew up with (hippy kid).

My dad does the world's best oil-popped popcorn and dang, is it good. I can't eat a lot, because the hulls really irritate my gums, but I *adore* it.

We do eat in front of the TV every few days. I don't worry about C's self-regulation, because he's more likely to eat less when watching TV, because he's distracted, and it's always easy to give him more to eat afterward if he's still hungry.
